Back in 2015 you met photographer Niall Patterson for the first time. I posted an exclusive interview documenting his tattoo portraits photography project Beauty Is Not Only Ink Deep.

Since then, I’ve gone on to work with him on various creative projects. Later that year he was part of Inkluded’s first tattoo exhibition.

Almost two years later, in this new Q&A, I wanted to find out more about Niall’s new ‘Floating Beauty‘ photography series.

Beccy: I have just seen your new tattoo portraits featuring tattooed models in bathtubs. The images are beautiful! What was the thinking behind this shoot?

Niall: It’s something I wanted to play around with for quite a while. I had spoken to a few people about it and knew that it had to be done in water. It’s a beautiful platform to work with, calm and powerful at the same time. The beauty of the water coupled with the beauty of the subjects – I just loved the concept.

Beccy: Which tattooed ladies were involved?

Niall: For the first set I got together with someone I had worked with before on Beauty Is Not Only Ink Deep (BINOID) – Laura Spencer. We spoke a few weeks before the shoot, planning outfits and colour options – she’s also an artist so she understood the look that I was going for.

The second model (Sophie Weldon) was actually a last minute decision! Laura had spoken to her about what we were doing and we had to get her involved!

The latest shoot was with Pixie Summer. We were actually only planning on shooting for BINOID but she had seen some of the images from the previous two and loved the idea. We decided to give it a go and it worked great!

Beccy: Why water and flowers?

Niall: Water is beautiful as it gives the sense of weightlessness. The flowers were added to help show depth in the image and to show the beauty of nature. Together, they’re magic.

Beccy: What were some of the challenges?

Niall: Shooting in small bathtubs was the biggest challenge! I had to be careful with how the models were laid out so they didn’t touch the side as this would have ruined the photos.

Beccy: Any plans to do it again in the future?

Niall: Yes! I have had a few enquiries so I would definitely like to continue with this style of beauty shot.
