Say hello to – Pauly…
Based: Second City Tattoo Club, Birmingham, UK
Describe your art in three words.
Slightly darker black.
When did you realise that you wanted to be an artist?
When I’d done about 30 jobs after school and hated everything, I’d always been drawings and making things, so thought I’d try my hand at living that way as nothing else was working.
What sort of jobs did you do before becoming a tattoo artist?
Multiple supermarket jobs, multiple night-shift jobs, telesales, working in an abattoir, plumber, fire safety engineer, barista, chef, scaffolder, door to door vacuum salesman and more. No joke.
What music do you listen to when working?
If it’s my choice I like punk, metal, hardcore or doom, but I work with Ghetto Bob (aka Rob Chatterley) so have to listen to R. Kelly quite a lot.
Who would you class as your influences?
One of my favourite artists is Ramon Maiden, his additions to pin-ups and religious artwork is incredible.
What’s your perfect dinner?
White wine and asparagus risotto. It’s not the most complicated dish but when it’s perfected, it’s delicious.
Describe your perfect day.
Up early, breakfast, flea market, brunch, gallery, lunch, cinema, dinner, computer games, supper, U.S. Office, bed. All in the company of my lovely girlfriend.
Recommend an album you think we should listen to.
All Them Witches – Our Mother Electricity.
It’s a bluesy, doing band. Beautiful songs, beautiful vocals and lyrics. Really good drawing music.
